If the mattress you currently have needs to be replaced and you are about to go out looking for another mattress, alas may be one of the first things you should do would be to take a look at a Talalay latex mattress. This is a type of foam mattress that you would reason is not manufactured with petrochemicals, but one would think was made from a more organic substance. The reality in fact is, that the natural element is the sap from a rubber tree, which one would consider, should figure latex foam mattresses are just about your best eco-friendly alternative. As we all know nothing is ever as simple as that. Latex can also be created synthetically, from petrochemical products, which means that you will be required to do a great amount of research with these products as with any other ‘green” friendly product.
There are two main ways that manufacturers employ to make latex mattresses. With the normal or standard technique, the fluid whether it is the sap of a rubber tree or the petrochemical fluid is stirred into a froth, which then creates the millions upon millions of minute air bubbles that are the reason why for the specific properties of a Talalay latex mattress. Then the fluid is poured into a mold, which is then sealed and heated until it cures into the form of the latex mattress. In the Talalay latex mattress system, the mold contains countless microscopic pinprick spikes that will make millions of extra little channels for air to pass through. This system creates a latex mattress that is so much more resilient and buoyant than all the other types.
So far it sounds as if both methods work fine for producing a latex mattress, so exactly why would anyone want to consider using a petrochemical based substance at all? The main reason is that natural latex is often less comfortable than the synthetic product. So consumers will either go for a foam bed made entirely of the petrochemical latex or, at best, they blend in some of the chemical product to add extra give and softness to the naturally produced latex. This of course means that you can purchase a completely synthetic mattress, a completely natural mattress, or a mattress that is a blend of the two materials.
The end result of all this is, that before you purchase a latex mattress, do some homework, as it is an absolute must. If natural latex is blended with natural oils, then it may be as a comfortable as an all-synthetic type mattress or maybe even a memory foam mattress topper. But even if the mattress has a eco friendly label, it may still contain some type of petrochemicals. So you will need to look for all of these things as you head out to purchase a mattress. Do some research to find out about both the manufacturers and their products, and find out the process and the materials they used. If you purchase a foam mattress, you will want to know exactly what you are getting before buy it and take it home.
