Desmoplastic Mesothelioma

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

In general, the risk of developing mesothelioma increases with increasing exposure to asbestos. However, there are also individual differences in reaction to asbestos. Some people will develop mesothelioma with very little exposure while others require much greater exposure. Not all individuals exposed to asbestos develop the disease.

There is evidence to suggest that individuals living with asbestos workers have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma. This may be because of asbestos particles carried home by the workers on their clothes, body, and hair. Asbestos workers are usually required to shower before leaving work to avoid exposing others to asbestos particles.

There are other possible causes of mesothelioma. Some research suggests that mesothelioma can be caused by exposure to thorium dioxide, a radioactive substance. From the 1920s to the 1950s thorium dioxide was used in certain x-rays. The material was found to be carcinogenic and it is no longer is use.

There is evidence that a family history of mesothelioma increases the risk of developing the disease. It is not uncommon for more than one person in a household to develop the disease. The reason for this is unknown. There may be a genetic component to the development of the disease. However, the higher incidence among family members could be due to environmental influences.

Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

There may be a way of experiencing the many benefits of a memory foam mattress without quite going to the expense of acquiring a new bed. After all, who wouldn’t want that great sleep, the excellent support, and a mattress that contours itself to you as you heat it up, yet returns to its normal shape in the morning? You may decide to go for a mattress enhancer, and save money by placing a foam mattress topper on top of your existing mattress.

But for the sake of your future comfort, you should be aware of some of the drawbacks of foam mattress toppers as well. The reason why memory foam works so well in the first place is that the top 3 inches or so heat up and will change shape, while the lower layer is not affected, remaining cool and firm. This is how much of the good supportive effects are derived. If you don’t already have an existing mattress to provide similar underlying firmness, then the good effects of the foam topper will undoubtedly be lost.

Another crucial factor is that your existing mattress cannot have sags in it, but must be completely flat and firm. A foam mattress topper will rely on the underlying surface for support, and will sag right along with it if it’s not firm or flat. Then as your body heat activates the visco elastic memory foam, it will change shape further, perhaps even accentuating the sagging. You may find that your sleep and comfort are made worse rather than better.

Since a faulty underlying mattress might rob you of whatever benefits you hoped to gain from your foam mattress topper, you may need to evaluate whether it’s a good idea to go that route. If it’s going to cost extra to make sure your underlying mattress provides the support needed to make the topper effective, then perhaps it would be wiser to accept the extra expense and buy a complete memory foam bed instead.
